Gate Showcases Highlight Student Achievements

The elementary GATE showcase, themed "Natural Wonders and Disasters," recognized 139 students from various schools. Awards were given in several categories, including Outstanding Contribution to the GATE Experience, School Choice Activity Awards (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), District Nature Field Journal Awards, and District Choice Activity Award.


All District elementary schools participated, supported by 15 dedicated GATE Facilitators. The event, hosted by Teacher on Special Assignment Jennie Wideman, included presentations from 10 student speakers who shared their experiences in the GATE program.


Special recognition was given in the District Choice Activity Awards:


  • 1st Place: Adam Sanchez from Geddes Elementary for his video "Tornado Adventure"
  • 2nd Place: Ivan Espinosa from Foster Elementary for his project "Park Ranger"
  • 3rd Place: Elvarose Collaso from BP STEM Academy for her work "The Ethical Treatment of Pets & Animals in a Natural Disaster"

Middle school students focused on "Creating Themed Websites," with awards presented in various categories, including Inquiry & Research, Artistry, Insight & Reflections, Creativity & Original Thinking, Cultural Awareness, Exploration of a Theme, Leadership, and Outstanding Contribution to the GATE Experience.


A total of 58 individual awards and 8 school awards were distributed. Each middle school in the District, supported by their GATE Facilitators, participated. The event kicked off with Assistant Superintendent Dr. Salazar delivering an inspiring welcome address.


Notable website themes and winners included:


  • Olive Middle School: "An Exploration of Food" (1st Place in overall)
  • BP STEM: "Expressions" (2nd Place in overall)
  • Jones: "Ocean: Aquatic Depths and Shallows"
  • Sierra Vista: "Sparks of Genius"

While students were primarily recognized for their achievements, some shared insights into their work and the dedication required to create their themed websites.


Both showcases highlighted the creativity, curiosity, and research skills of GATE students, demonstrating the program's success in nurturing young talent across the District.
