Matadors Celebrate Esports Program Launch with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

The event, attended by families, District leaders, staff, students, and community members, featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, guest speakers, and a tour of the school’s new gaming arena.

Special guests included Board President John B. De Leon emphasized the importance of inclusive programs that keep students engaged and connected to their education. In addition, Board Member Ricardo Vazques led the ribbon-cutting, and Principal Julio Nunez also addressed attendees, highlighting the program’s impact on student growth.

“I'm extremely gratified that we are able to provide our students with this fantastic opportunity to engage with state-of-the-art technology in the growing field of esports,” Nunez said. “Our District and community partners continue to come together to create these opportunities for future success.”

Guest speaker Joe Gallardo, Think Together Regional Manager for the San Gabriel Region, shared insights on the value of esports in education. Nunez echoed this sentiment, noting that beyond gaming, the program will instill commitment, sportsmanship, and a stronger sense of school connection among students.

Following the ceremony, guests explored the Matador Arena, which features 24 gaming PCs, plus four additional stations for broadcasting, editing, live streaming, and coaching. Attendees also had the chance to meet coaches Mario Lopez, a game design and math teacher, and Monique Schonlaub, a campus security aide. The event concluded with refreshments and cookies, as excitement built for the program’s future.

The Matadors Esports team is set to begin its season on March 3, with a scrimmage match planned against Jones Middle School soon. Due to overwhelming interest, the program already has a waitlist, with students being added as spots become available. To participate, students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and meet attendance and behavior expectations.

As the Matadors Esports Program takes off, more schools across the District are expected to implement similar programs soon, further expanding opportunities for students to engage in competitive gaming while developing essential academic and social skills.
